Mental health struggles are real—and they’re way more common than you think. Whether it’s stress, anxiety, burnout, or depression, uni life can be a lot. But knowing how to support a friend with their mental health can make a massive difference—and it doesn’t need to be complicated.
At Orlando Village, we’re big on creating a caring community. From our Buddy System to the Life Lounge at the University of Bolton, there are loads of ways you can be there for your mate while looking after yourself too.
Ask how to support a friend who’s struggling mentally 🧠
When someone you care about is going through it, it can feel awkward or even scary to ask questions—but communication is everything.
Try starting with:
-
“Do you want to talk about it or just hang out?”
-
“Is there anything I can do to help you feel less overwhelmed?”
Sometimes, people just want to feel seen. Other times, they may need space—and that’s okay too. Let them take the lead, and don’t pressure them to ‘cheer up’ or act like their usual self.
Why listening is key when offering mental health support 🗣️
(support a friend with their mental health)
It’s tempting to go into fix-it mode—but that’s not always helpful. If your mate wants to open up, just listen. You don’t need to give advice or have answers.
A few simple ways to show you’re present:
-
Nod, make eye contact, and put your phone away.
-
Say things like “That sounds really tough” or “Thanks for telling me.”
-
Avoid saying “It could be worse” or “At least…”
Your empathy and presence matter more than you might realise.
Suggest professional mental health resources and go with them 💛
Encouraging your friend to get professional support is one of the kindest things you can do. If they’re nervous, offer to go with them.
At the University of Bolton, the Life Lounge offers counselling, workshops, and wellbeing support—it’s free, confidential, and right on campus.
And if your friend lives at Orlando Village, you can even walk over together. Just knowing they’re not doing it alone can make that first step a little easier.
Use the Buddy System to support student wellbeing together 🤝
At Orlando Village, we’ve got a built-in support network through our Buddy System. It’s all about helping each other settle in, make friends, and talk honestly about uni life.
Whether you’re dealing with something tough or want to support someone who is, having a buddy to check in with makes a huge difference.
You’re never alone—and neither is your mate.
Respect your friend’s pace with emotional support 🕊️
When you want to help someone feel better ASAP, it’s hard to wait. But one of the most important parts of offering emotional support is patience.
They might not be ready to talk. They might be figuring things out privately. That’s okay.
Just keep showing up—in little ways like:
-
Sending a check-in text
-
Inviting them for a chill night in
-
Leaving a treat outside their door
It’s not about grand gestures. It’s about showing you care, consistently.
Don’t forget to care for yourself too 🌱
(supporting others with mental health challenges)
Being the go-to support person can be draining—so take breaks when you need to. Chat to someone you trust, or book time at the Life Lounge for yourself.
And remember:
Supporting a friend with their mental health isn’t about fixing them. It’s about standing beside them.
