Moving into student accommodation can be a daunting step.

If you’ve chosen a university that’s miles away from home, as most students do, you’ll probably not know your way around the area without using Maps on your phone or asking someone to point you in the right direction. And let’s face it, you’re going to be surrounded by a lot of unfamiliar faces both at your halls of residence and on your course.

Here at Orlando Village, we appreciate that nobody wants a dark, dingy, dated room when staying at student halls.

That’s why – although you’ll have all the basic amenities you need at our student accommodation in Bolton – we thought we’d share a few student-friendly décor tips for bedrooms that can make those first weeks and months feel more homely.

Add fairy lights

Whether they’re draped along the wall behind your bed, strung in the corners of your room, or in a glass jar on your windowsill, fairy lights can add cosiness to even the smallest of spaces.

Aside from brightening things up, they can also create a more relaxed environment that’s perfect for relaxing and studying.

Display photographs

You’d be surprised how much comfort photos of your family, friends, and favourite memories can bring whilst you’re away at uni. These could be stuck on the wall, in photo albums or frames, or even hung on a string of fairy lights or a washing line across the room with pegs.

Plus, apps like FreePrints® allow you to print photos quickly, easily, and for free from your smartphone or tablet. Postage costs no more than £3.99 and your photos will be printed and delivered to your door in just a few days.

Hang things on the wall with Command strips

Noticeboards, framed artwork, photographs, revision notes – they can all be hung on the walls to create a focal point at your student accommodation.

However, if you’re planning to hang things up on the wall, our best advice is to invest in some Command strips and hooks, as opposed to blu-tac and drawing pins that leave a trace behind when you take them down!

Adorn your room with soft furnishings

We’re talking fluffy throws, blankets and cushions to dress the bed, a nice rug to put at the door, and some gorgeous bedding and curtains.

These are all simple additions that won’t break the bank but will help you to put your stamp on the place – making it feel cosy, stylish and sophisticated.

Buy a house plant or something to grow

House plants can bring life to the drabbest of rooms, literally. They can add pops of colour to an otherwise bland space, look great in quirk pots, and help purify the air, allowing you to study better. Don’t forget to water them, though.

If you’d prefer something more low-maintenance, consider a cactus plant that doesn’t require a lot of care but looks beautiful. Alternatively, you could grow your own fruit and veg? That way, you can enjoy delicious home-grown food whilst saving money on your weekly shop. Win-win.

How will you choose to decorate your student accommodation?

These are just a few ways you can make your student accommodation more comfortable without blowing your student loan. There are many more creative things you can do.

However, it’s worth noting that, like most accommodation providers, we don’t allow candles or wax burners for health and safety reasons. Therefore, if you’re wanting to make your student room more fragrant, you should opt for reed diffusers, air fresheners, or room sprays instead.

If you have any questions about what modifications you can make to your room when staying at our student accommodation in Bolton, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Either call 01204 903 488 or email info@orlandovillage.co.uk, and we’ll respond as soon as possible.
