If you’ll be moving into student accommodation in September, you’ve probably already made a start on the packing – ensuring you have the bare essentials ready for moving-in day. However, you may have a couple of things on your list that you still need to buy, but are desperately waiting for them to go on sale.
Here at Orlando Village, we love a good a bargain and are constantly looking for ways to help the students staying at our student accommodation in Bolton to save money, too.
UniKitOut can deliver various packs directly to your accommodation before you move in – giving you one less thing to worry about. And the best bit is, if you’re staying with us, you can benefit from 10% off your order by simply entering ‘Orlando10’ at the checkout!
Below, we thought we’d share some more tips on how and where to find the best student deals – both now and during your university years.
Technology
Does your laptop have enough storage to save your uni work? Need a new phone so you can keep in touch with your loved ones back home?
Well, you’re in luck as many retailers (i.e. Amazon, Apple, Canon and Carphone Warehouse) provide student discounts on electronics and software – allowing you to get your hands on the tech you need for less.
Our best advice is to research what special offers are available online, and have a look in-store. For example, UNiDAYS regularly provide discounted rates for technology and you can use your student ID in various shops.
Clothes and fashion
Need a new winter coat for uni? Perhaps you want to treat yourself to the latest pair of trainers? Or add a touch of bling to your outfits with accessories?
Most high street stores offer at least 10% off for students with a valid ID and student email address, which is great for saving money. You could put the money that you save towards something else – be it more clothes, a night out in town or a holiday for when exams are over.
To make things more convenient, try looking on ASOS. They stock everything from menswear and womenswear to footwear, accessories and gifts under the same roof. You can buy everything you need without paying for postage separately. Just remember to pop your promo or student code in the box before proceeding to the checkout.
Health and beauty
Ranging from skincare products and makeup to gym memberships and vitamins, getting your feel-good regime sorted at uni needn’t break the bank – not when such items are often priced at a reduced rate for students.
It’s worth keeping an eye out for promotional events in-store and checking your emails if you’ve signed up for newsletters. Boots, for instance, send out money-off coupons in the post and have an Advantage Card scheme, allowing you to collect points every time you make a purchase.
Alternatively, you may prefer to stock up on health and beauty products from the comfort of your room once you’ve settled into your student accommodation in Bolton. Visit the website and enter the unique discount code (and your Advantage Card no.). The price will update and your points will be totted up at the end.
Superdrug offers an exclusive 10% off for students – both in-store and online – allowing you to get your makeup fix on a budget.
Food and drink
Need to grab a quick bite to eat on your way home from uni? Want to make a restaurant booking to mark a special occasion? Or maybe you just want to save yourself some £££s on your weekly shop?
The good news is, UNiDAYS has students covered – offering everything from 35% off takeaway pizzas at Domino’s to a free round of drinks at ASK Italian and 10% off groceries at Co-op.
Another top tip to help you save money at student accommodation is to go shopping later in the evening – ideally, after you’ve eaten. This will stop you from buying any unnecessary snacks to curb pangs of hunger and the cost of products close to their sell-by dates is often reduced.
Travel
Although parking is available at our student accommodation in Bolton, we find that most students opt to leave their car at home. Mainly because our purpose-built halls are within easy reach of the main campus and the town centre, and they don’t have to worry about getting a parking spot and filling up with petrol.
If you’re planning on visiting family and friends at the weekend, or need to travel outside of town to attend placements, it’s worth buying a 16-25 Railcard. Admittedly, it will cost you £30 a year (or £70 for three years), but you’ll get up to 1/3 off rail fares.
Alternatively, you could hop on the Megabus. Book early and you’ll only pay a few pounds to travel. Plus, students get an extra 10% off!
