How to cope with moving away from home - Orlando Village

You’ve finally packed up your belongings and you’re off to Uni.

Whilst you’re bursting with excitement to get settled in at your student accommodation and make loads of new friends – between you and me – your parents are equally as excited they won’t have to do your washing, ironing and cooking anymore!

All jokes aside – they’ll miss having you around, and although you’ll hate to admit it, you’ll miss them too.

It’s completely normal to feel homesick, especially in your first few weeks at uni when you’re learning to live independently and navigate your way around a place you’re unfamiliar with.

The good news is, you’re not on your own. Many students will be feeling exactly the same.

To help you find your feet and feel more at ease when living away from home, the team at Orlando Village have put together some top tips.

  • Keep in touch with loved ones – moving away to uni is a big deal, not just for you but your family and friends back home too.

Don’t leave them in the dark about how you’re feeling and what you’ve been up to. Facetime or drop a quick text to let them know how you’re getting on. And be honest! It’s pointless saying you’re fine when you’re not, as they’ll be able to tell if you’re fibbing.

  • Pack some home comforts – whether it be your favourite duvet cover or a cuddly teddy you’ve had since you were little, having a few home comforts close by will really help to curb homesickness. It will give your flat a more homely feel too.

If you haven’t already, we suggest downloading the FreePrints app from the App Store or Google Play. This allows you to print off your fave photos (paying for the postage only) and display them all around your room. Put some in a frame on your desk or fasten favourites to a string of twinkling fairy lights with pegs.

  • Chat to your flatmates – you might be tempted to shut yourself away in your room and bottle everything up, but try not to. Instead, open up to at least one of your flatmates or someone on your course.

The great thing about our student accommodation in Bolton is that we have a communal area (The Hub) that’s perfect for socialising and playing games such as pool and table football. If you’re not really in the mood to talk, take advantage of the comfy seating and watch some TV.

  • Find a hobby – if there’s one thing you’ll learn when you go to uni, it’s that there are loads of societies, clubs and sports teams to get involved with.

Signing up for a club or trying something new may be daunting at first, but it’s a fantastic way to learn new skills and make life-long friendships. It enables you to take a break from your studies too – recharging your batteries and easing your troubles.

Above all, joining a society or finding a new hobby is a welcomed distraction when you’re missing home.

  • Remind yourself it’s not forever – everyone has a reason for deciding to go to university. For some, it’s to achieve the qualifications required to secure their dream job, others have a passion for studying or simply want to try out ‘uni life’.

Depending on the course you’re studying, you’ll be living away from home for 3 or 4 years (unless you decide to go on and do a Masters!). Before you know it, it’ll all be over – so make the most of your uni experience. Don’t be afraid to try new things, learn new skills and socialise.
