Starting uni at the University of Greater Manchester this September? Moving into student accommodation in Bolton is super exciting — but figuring out how to get to know your flatmates can feel a bit nerve-wracking at first.
Whether you’re sharing a kitchen, a bathroom, or just bumping into each other in the hallway, making those first connections early can make your uni experience a whole lot better.
As the only accommodation recommended by the University of Greater Manchester, we’ve rounded up our best tips to help you get to know your flatmates before move-in day (and avoid any awkward silences when you first meet 👀).
Find your flatmates online before move-in
Social media makes it so much easier to get to know your flatmates before you even unpack your suitcase.
Search Facebook or Instagram for your accommodation or uni — most have private groups or pages for new students. You can introduce yourself, find people on your course, and even plan meet-ups.
At Orlando Village, we have a private Facebook group just for residents. It’s a great way to meet people who’ll be staying in your block, start group chats, and make friends before September even begins.
Start a group chat to get to know your flatmates
Let’s face it — we all live in group chats these days. Creating one for your new flat is one of the easiest ways to get to know your flatmates before move-in day.
Not only can you plan what to bring (no one needs five toasters), but it’s also a fun way to start chatting about what you’re excited for — whether that’s freshers’ week, club nights, or exploring Bolton’s food spots.
Once you’ve moved in, keep the chat alive with ideas for movie nights, games evenings, or cooking together.
Skip the small talk and ask fun questions
If the thought of small talk makes you want to hide in your room, you’re not alone. The key to connecting is asking fun, open-ended questions that go beyond “where are you from?”
Try:
-
“What’s your go-to comfort meal?”
-
“What’s one thing you had to pack for uni?”
-
“Who’s the most likely to miss a 9am lecture?”
It’s an easy way to get to know your flatmates on a real level — and maybe even find someone who shares your love of bad TV or midnight snacks.
Meet up at The Hub at Orlando Village
Here’s a little insider tip — The Hub at Orlando Village is the perfect place to get to know your flatmates in person.
It’s got everything: a TV, table tennis, football and pool tables, and plenty of comfy sofas. So why not send a message in your flat group chat and organise a mini games night or chill hangout?
It’s way more fun than bonding over who forgot the washing-up liquid.
Make the most of Freshers’ Week
Freshers’ Week is your chance to meet new people, try new things, and get to know your new city. Go out with your flatmates, check out society events, and join in on campus nights.
Not only will you get to know your flatmates better, but you’ll also make lasting memories before lectures start taking over your calendar.
Cook together in your shared kitchen
Nothing brings people together quite like food.
Our self-catered student accommodation in Bolton gives you access to a shared kitchen — perfect for cooking together, swapping recipes, or hosting a “Flat Come Dine With Me.”
If you’re not confident in the kitchen, don’t stress. Ask your flatmates to teach you something easy, or plan themed nights like “taco Tuesday” or “pasta party.” Just remember — whoever doesn’t cook does the washing up!
